Doringpoort Diary: A Safari That Didn't Exactly Go to Plan (And I Loved It Anyway)
Day 1: Arrival and a Hunch of Hysteria
- 08:00 - The Ominous Breakfast: Woke up at Dulles Airport, already regretting my decision to try a "breakfast burrito" that tasted suspiciously like… cardboard wrapped in soggy lettuce. The flight to Johannesburg felt endless, a blur of airplane peanuts and questionable in-flight entertainment. My stomach still grumbles in protest.
- 17:00 - The Pick-Up (and the Anxiety Attack): Finally! Reached Johannesburg. Finding the transfer to Doringpoort… well, that was an adventure. My phone signal vanished. I envisioned myself stranded forever next to a broken-down taxi, slowly being swallowed by the South African bush (dramatic, I know!). A kind, sweaty man eventually found me, holding a sign with my tragically misspelled name on it - "Mrs. (misspelling) S., we are very late!"

We saw a lot of birds (still good, but not exactly a lion).
- 09:00 - The Zebra Moment: Then we saw them. Zebras! Standing there, perfectly striped, and… I got weirdly emotional. Like, staring-into-the-abyss kind of emotional. What is the point of stripes? - 14:00 - The afternoon drive. (finally, something that moved): The whole group was ready to go out. They were excited. I, however, was still reeling from the existential crisis. I just wanted to go back, but knew that was impossible. When we found the lions things changed. The lions were amazing. We saw them, we watched them. Amazing.
- 20:00 - Dinner, Drinks, and Diary: I'm convinced that I need an extra large diary after this trip. We got to have a drink with the other travelers. They were very kind, and even told me that the crying made the trip more interesting. We talked about the things we saw, the way the animals moved. I loved it.
Day 3: Water, Watering Holes, and the Wobbly Bridge
- **08:00 - Late start! ** Slept in, which felt amazing. Coffee on the deck, overlooking the bush. The quiet was incredible. The sun warming my face. Pure bliss.
- 10:00 - Water Waterholes and Elephant Encounters: Spent the morning at a waterhole. The idea was to stay hydrated and look for animals. We actually found animals! We saw them all. And then… elephants. These majestic giants. Close up. Drinking, playing, just being elephants. I think I giggled and cried at the same time. Absolute magic.
- 14:00 - The Suspension Bridge of Doom: Walking tour through the bush (meant to be relaxing.) We reached a rickety suspension bridge. I have a slight fear of heights. Okay, maybe a massive phobia. Every step felt like an eternity. I may or may not have screamed a little on the way across. Pieter just chuckled. He’s definitely seen it all.
- 16:00 - Afternoon Drive. (the great view): We got tired of seeing some animals. We decided to go to the highest point in the area for a view. The view was amazing. The animals were amazing again. We saw monkeys. I was happy again.
Day 4: Goodbye Doringpoort, Hello Reality (and a Vow to Return)
06:00 - Last Sunrise and Last Coffee: Another early start. Another incredible sunrise. Another cup of glorious coffee. I was a little less weepy this time. Okay, maybe just a little.
07:00 - The Sad Farewell Game Drive: The last game drive. We saw one last amazing sunset. The sun set. We waved goodbye to the other travelers, but the sun was setting. I was sad. I can't wait to come back one day.
09:00 - Departure: The flight to Johannesburg. My flight home. (Less than thrilled about the return to reality and the piles of laundry waiting for me)
12:00 - The Airplane Food (and Contemplations): The food on the plane. It was so bad, that I started to forget the trip. I wanted to go back. I can't wait to go back one day.
20:00 - The conclusion. Absolutely human. This trip to Doringpoort was messy, emotional, and a total game-changer. I may have set fire to my clothes, cried over zebras, and screamed on a bridge. But I also witnessed the most incredible beauty and felt more connected to the world than ever before. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I'm already planning my return. And I'm bringing extra mosquito repellent.

¡Ay, amiga, eso es lo primero que pensé! Cuando vi las fotos de Doringpoort, pensé: "Esto es, definitivamente, 'PhotoshopLandia'." Pero, te juro, al llegar... ¡la realidad te da una bofetada! Una bofetada buena, de "¡Guau!"
Los colores, la luz... Es como si el sol sudafricano tuviera un filtro mágico incorporado. ¿Retocadas? Quizás un poquito, para ajustar la saturación... pero, en general, ¡es real! Estás ahí, desayunando con jirafas a 20 metros, y piensas "¿De verdad esto está pasando? ¿No estoy soñando?".
Y luego, claro, la vida real se cuela: el polvo en la ropa... la mosca que te persigue... pero incluso con eso, ¡la magia persiste! Una autentica maravilla.
¿Qué animales podré ver? ¿Y si no veo los "Big Five"? ¿Me decepcionaré?
A ver, lo de los "Big Five" (león, leopardo, rinoceronte, elefante y búfalo) es como... la lista de deseos obligatoria. Pero, ¿sabes qué? ¡No te obsesiones! Claro, es emocionante verlos, ¡y en Doringpoort tienes muy buenas posibilidades! (Yo vi a un león ¡y casi me da un infarto de la emoción!).
Pero la cosa es que... la magia está en TOOODO lo demás. Las manadas de cebras, las gacelas saltando, los pájaros con unos colores que no te puedes imaginar... Mira, incluso ver un tejón de la miel (que es súper escurridizo, ¡me dijeron!) fue un puntazo.
Total, que si no ves a los "Big Five", no te amargues la vida. ¡Lo importante es conectar con la naturaleza! Además, ¿quién te dice que el leopardo no está acechando, justo ahí mismo, mirándote desde la hierba alta?
Y otra cosa, me enteré de que un señor, muy experimentado, ¡nunca vio a un leopardo! ¡Jamás! Y tan feliz con sus avistamientos.
¿Son cómodas las habitaciones? ¿Y la comida? ¡Soy muy de comer!
¡Ay, las habitaciones! ¡Un sueño! Yo me imaginaba una tienda de campaña con goteras, pero ¡para nada! Son unas cabañas, como mini-mansiones, con vistas espectaculares. Camas inmensas, baños de lujo... ¡No querrás salir de ahí!
Y la comida... ¡Dios mío! ¡Prepara el estómago! Hay de todo, desde platos locales (¡el biltong es adictivo!) hasta opciones internacionales. El chef es un genio, ¡y creo que me enamoré de sus postres!
Un día pedí una ensalada... y me trajeron una ensalada... ¡como de revista! Con flores comestibles, con salsas raras... ¡una locura! Y el desayuno... buffff, te da energía para toda la mañana. ¡Yo comía como una lima!
En serio, olvídate de la dieta. Aquí se viene a disfrutar.
¿Cómo es la experiencia de los safaris? ¿Son largos? ¿Me aburriré? ¡Me mareo en los coches!
¡Los safaris! ¡Lo mejor de todo! Piensa en ello, primero con la idea de "Voy a aburrirme como una ostra". Pero, ¡para nada! Los guías son unos cracks, te explican todo, te cuentan historias... ¡y te hacen reír!
La duración es perfecta. Ni muy cortos, ni muy largos. Suficientes para ver animales y disfrutar del paisaje, pero sin agotarte. Además, el vehículo es cómodo, ¡y van despacio! Aunque, si eres de los que se marean... lleva biodramina, por si acaso. ¡A mí no me dio tiempo ni a enterarme!
Lo que más me gustó fue el contraste entre las mañanas y las tardes. Por la mañana, el sol, la frescura... ¡Una maravilla! Por la tarde, los colores se vuelven más intensos, y la atmósfera es más misteriosa. Ver la puesta de sol desde el vehículo... ¡simplemente épico!
En definitiva, es como vivir "El Rey León"... ¡pero en vivo y en directo!
¿Qué debo empacar? ¿Necesito ropa especial? ¿Y repelente de mosquitos?
¡La maleta! ¡El drama de todo viajero! A ver, olvídate de los tacones y las lentejuelas. Aquí la clave es la comodidad. Ropa holgada, de colores neutros (para no llamar la atención de los animales, ¡aunque no sé si funciona!) y que transpire.
Imprescindible: sombrero, crema solar, gafas de sol y ¡repelente de mosquitos! Los mosquitos son un poco pesados, sí. Pero, no te preocupes, en Doringpoort hacen todo lo posible para controlarlos. ¡Y no te olvides de un buen libro! O dos... o tres...
Unos buenos prismáticos son fundamentales. Y una cámara de fotos... ¡o tu móvil! Para que puedas presumir de fotos en Instagram (¡totalmente justificado!). Ah, y lleva algo de abrigo, sobre todo para las noches y las primeras horas de la mañana. El clima puede cambiar de repente.
Un par de consejos de "supervivencia": Un chubasquero fino (por si acaso) y... ¡un botiquín! No hay nada peor que un dolor de cabeza en medio de la sabana.
¿Es seguro? ¿Corro peligro? ¡Me da miedo que me coma un león!
¡Ay, claro que da un poco de respeto! ¡Es normal! Pero, en general, Doringpoort es muy seguro. Los guías son profesionales, conocen el terreno a la perfección y saben cómo actuar en cada situación.
Durante los safaris, te mantienes dentro del vehículo, así que estás protegido. Y por la noche, las instalaciones están protegidas, con vallas o guardias. ¡No te van a comer los leones! (salvo que hagas algo muy, muy tonto... ¡y no te recomiendo hacerlo!).
Claro, siempre hay que ser prudente, respetar a la naturaleza y seguir las indicaciones de los guías. Pero, vamos, que vas a estar más seguro que andando por la calle en muchas ciudades. ¡Relájate y disfruta!
